Chiefly Speaking – Turning Point

| Written by

At the 2018 National Order of the Arrow Conference, we talked extensively about the impact our choices have on our lives. Aristotle said “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”

The Order of the Arrow is at a Turning Point in our evolution as an organization. As with any critical juncture, we’re faced with a series of choices. In the Order of the Arrow, no one is better at coming up with new ideas or proposing creative solutions to everyday challenges we face. The thing is — a majority of these new ideas and proposed solutions simply never come to fruition. Execution is a choice. Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., Charles Darwin, Nelson Mandella – anyone that has ever made a difference in the world — didn’t become famous by leaving a project unfinished. Their life’s work was never, ever, giving up.

Next year, the Order of the Arrow will officially become (for the first time ever) the honor society for ALL members of the Boy Scouts of America. It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity to grow our organization in new and innovative ways. It’s our chance to ensure that the experiences that have been available to us continue to be available for future generations. Each of you has the opportunity and the ability to make decisions that bring this vision to life. There’s a seat at the table for you, if you want it, and we want you to want it.

This year — I challenge you to be the cheerleaders for change; to be the leader that goes the extra mile to see your goal through to completion; and to devout all of your energy to helping the local program succeed. As Arrowmen, we’re called to fuel Scouting’s adventure by leading through service; now, more than ever before. Will you answer the call?

With the courage to change,

Justin St. Louis
